Offside is a lovely, thought-provoking comedy about a group of women attempting to gain access to a World Cup qualifier between Iran and Bahrain. No excuse is necessary to give it another outing, but this one-off screening is one of many taking place around the world this week to raise awareness of the ongoing imprisonment of the film's Iranian director, Jafar Panahi.
Panahi has won international awards and acclaim for his films, which also include The Circle and Crimson Gold. His work is often critical of the repressive aspects of Iranian society, and is banned in his home country. On 1st March he was arrested at his home and has been held without charge since then. You can find updates on the situation at the Free Jafar Panahi facebook page, and the International Campaign on Human Rights in Iran have also published a report on Panahi's condition by his wife.
