The Wooden Lightbox: a secret art of seeing
With parts pillaged from other projectors Vancouver-based artist Alex MacKenzie has built his own ingenious hand-cranked device called The Wooden Lightbox. Drawing on ideas and techniques from film's infancy, he presents an expanded cinema performance using an array of handmade and processed emulsion to conjure up hidden dream-worlds. The Wooden Lightbox will be accompanied by a selection of short films and music, and Alex will also be running a workshop earlier in the day:
Flashes of Light:
16mm Rayogram Contact Printing Workshop
1-5pm at Vivid
Price: £5
This workshop explores the potential of moving image rayograms, the technique whereby objects are placed on the surface of the film, exposed to light, and processed to negative. The workshop will also incorporate contact printing into this process, where images of pre-existing found footage are used as source material, manipulated on the surface of the raw film stock, and exposed to create stunning new images. 16mm film stock will be supplied and a group piece will be created by running lengths of film out and each working on an area of it under a safelight. No prior experience necessary. Places limited - book through Vivid on 0121 766 7876 or email info@vivid.org.uk.
Presented in association with Vivid.
